A heartbreaking admission has sent shockwaves through Scotland: a major health board has finally conceded that contaminated water within a Glasgow super-hospital was directly linked to fatal infections in young cancer patients. This admission marks a significant turning point in a long and painful saga.
The NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC), after years of denial, made this stark U-turn during closing submissions to a lengthy inquiry. This inquiry was launched in the wake of several deaths tied to infections, including the tragic case of 10-year-old Milly Main, who succumbed to an infection in August 2017 while recovering from leukemia treatment.
On Monday, the Scottish Conservatives wasted no time, immediately demanding an urgent statement from the SNP government's health secretary, Neil Gray. This demand followed the eleventh-hour admission to the Scottish hospitals inquiry. The inquiry itself was established in 2020 with the aim of scrutinizing the design and construction of the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow and the Royal Hospital for Children, both of which share a campus and have been plagued by crises.
Milly was one of two children who tragically died at the Royal Hospital for Children. The cancer ward where they were treated was subsequently shut down due to serious concerns about water contamination.
In a crucial move, the health board, in its closing submissions, acknowledged that it was "more likely than not" that the children's infections were connected to the hospital's water system. They further stated that they accepted a causal link between some patient infections and the hospital environment, particularly the water system.
Milly's mother, Kimberly Darroch, expressed relief at the admission, but also voiced the immense pain of a six-year battle for answers. She highlighted that this acknowledgment, while a milestone, underscores the arduous fight families have endured to simply have the truth recognized.
The U-turn was hailed as a "turning point" by Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar, who has relentlessly sought answers from the board and the Scottish government alongside Darroch.
But here's where it gets controversial... Sarwar has called for the corporate homicide investigation, which is already underway, to be expanded to include politicians, whom he accuses of a cover-up. He described the situation as "one of the worst failures in modern Scottish public life," citing a litany of problems since the hospital opened: water safety concerns, environmental risks, governance failures, and devastating infections.
The NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde is already a suspect in a corporate homicide investigation related to patient deaths, including Milly Main's. Sarwar believes that the SNP ministers responsible for the alleged cover-up should also be included, calling it a serious criminal matter.
A Scottish government spokesperson stated that the public inquiry was established to provide families with answers and to learn lessons for future hospital projects. As an independent core participant, the government is committed to assisting the inquiry and, therefore, would not comment further at this time.
An NHSGGC spokesperson reiterated their full commitment to supporting the inquiry's investigations.
