A true hero stands at the crossroads of Bedford Road and Lowther Avenue in downtown Toronto, a beacon of safety and charm for the children of Huron Public School and Jesse Ketchum Public School. Meet Khevin Enriquez, a crossing guard who has captured the hearts of parents and students alike.
With a unique blend of duty and charisma, Enriquez has earned the title of one of Canada's favorite crossing guards. His passion for ensuring the safety of children shines through in every interaction.
"This job is a blessing. I take pride in providing a sense of security for the kids," Enriquez shares. He believes in connecting with each person he assists, tailoring his approach to their needs.
"The connection is unique with every individual. Some just want to get from point A to B, and I respect that," he explains.
Despite being relatively new to the role, Enriquez's impact is undeniable. Parents from both schools nominated him for the prestigious Canada's Favorite Crossing Guard contest, a testament to his positive influence.
Jonnalyn Rosal, a parent, gushes, "My kids light up when they see him in the mornings. Even on rainy days, he brings a smile to their faces, like a rainbow in the rain."
Out of 126 nominees, Enriquez was one of only three winners across Canada, and the sole winner from Ontario. His dedication and warmth have left a lasting impression.
Former Toronto police traffic officer Sean Shapiro attended a ceremony honoring Enriquez, praising him as "a friendly reminder of what we should all strive for."
"He's the embodiment of doing the right thing. For the kids, he's a leader, teaching them how to navigate the streets safely. He's an indicator of hope and responsibility," Shapiro adds.
The charity "Parachute" has been awarding Canada's Favorite Crossing Guard since 2005, celebrating those who keep kids safe with a smile. On their website, Parachute highlights Enriquez's professionalism and warmth, stating that he makes a "remarkable difference."
"Even in challenging conditions, he remains calm and attentive. His genuine kindness ensures everyone feels safe and valued. He lifts spirits and teaches safety in a way that leaves a lasting impression," the charity wrote.
Enriquez believes in the power of a positive start to the day. "When kids are happy crossing the streets, it sets the tone for their day at school. It's like a ripple effect of positivity," he says.
On one of the coldest days, Enriquez spread warmth and kindness, saying, "I want everyone to feel seen and included."
