FC Utrecht Crisis: Coach & Celtic Ex-Goalie Appeal for Calm | Europa League Preview (2026)

FC Utrecht is facing a serious crisis, and their plea for unity ahead of a crucial European clash with Celtic is a stark indicator of their struggles. Head coach Ron Jans has teamed up with former Celtic goalkeeper Vasilis Barkas in an unusual appeal to their fanbase, urging for calm as they prepare to face the Scottish champions at Celtic Park.

Celtic is on the cusp of advancing to the knockout playoffs of the Europa League, and a win against the Dutch side would seal their progression. For FC Utrecht, however, this match is a formality as they have already been eliminated from the competition. Their woes extend beyond Europe, with their domestic form in the Eredivisie plummeting alarmingly. The club currently sits in a disappointing tenth position, having suffered four consecutive defeats. This slide in performance has understandably intensified frustration among the supporters.

The recent 1-0 home loss to Genk in Europe, a match that left Jans' team with a mere single point from seven European fixtures, was the tipping point for many fans. In a bid to de-escalate the simmering discontent, Jans revealed that he met with a delegation of supporters, accompanied by Barkas, to address their concerns and foster a renewed sense of unity.

But here's where it gets controversial... Vasilis Barkas, the Greek goalkeeper, was once a significant investment for Celtic, signed for a hefty £4.5 million from AEK Athens six years ago. His tenure in Glasgow, however, was largely defined by underwhelming performances, failing to establish himself as a reliable first-choice keeper. He made a mere 24 appearances during his time at the club, with Celtic securing victory in only nine of those Scottish Premiership matches. This history, while not directly Utrecht's fault, adds an interesting layer to his involvement in this plea for support.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Utrecht boss Jans expressed his determination: "I’m going to fight. We have to stick together, work hard, and not complain. That’s the path we’re taking. I have also met a delegation of fans, together with Vasilis Barkas. Those supporters had also noticed that things weren’t going well. But they were willing to support us. I was pleasantly surprised by the group that was there. Kudos to them. They want to help us."

Jans remains resolute, stating, "I’m confident we’ll turn things around. Otherwise, I wouldn’t be here. Things have crossed my mind, but I haven’t considered resigning. I’ve never given up a coaching job before. It’s not going so well at the moment. But turning things around would be fantastic."

Meanwhile, Martin O’Neill’s Celtic side will be looking to capitalize on Utrecht's struggles and secure their place in the Europa League playoffs with a victory at Celtic Park on Thursday evening.

Now, over to you: Do you think a former player, especially one with a mixed past at the opposing club, can genuinely help mend fan relations? Or is this a desperate move by a coach under immense pressure? Share your thoughts in the comments below!
