Our mission is to promote learning through quality literary experiences for all.

Please join us in Topeka for the 2017 KRA Conference on Monday, October 30. It will take place at the Washburn University Memorial Union, 1700 College Avenue in Topeka.

During this year's conference we will celebrate Educators: Literacy Superheroes. The conference will feature special guest and visiting author Steven Layne, who wrote the 2016-2017 KRA Professional Book Study's In Defense of Read Aloud. On this page we have more information about Mr. Layne and his keynote address entitled "Confessions of a Reading Arsonist." Author Aaron Reynolds will accept the 2017 Bill Martin, Jr. Picture Book Award for his book Nerdy Birdy and speak during the conference.

Presentations for the 2017 KRA Conference are set, and they are amazing! We will have sessions on integrating STEM with literacy, vocabulary, reading strategies addressing fluency and comprehension, diversity, and banned books. Technology will be the highlight of two sessions, and three of our local authors/illustrators have their own sessions this year! AUTHOR AND VENDOR TABLE REGISTRATION: Due August 1

CONFERENCE SPECIAL GUEST: Steve Layne

The author of the book In Defense of Read-Aloud: Sustaining the Best Practice, Steven Layne, will be the keynote speaker at the 2017 KRA Conference on October 30, 2017 in Topeka, KS. He will also speak at a break-out session during the day.

STEVEN LAYNE'S KEYNOTE ADDRESS: Confessions of a Reading Arsonist

With his trademark combination of humor and heart, Steven Layne tackles one of the most significant issues in reading instruction today: How to engage reluctant readers. Teaching the skill of reading is viewed by many educators as a major objective; teaching the will of reading is too often an afterthought. Based on his bestselling book Igniting a Passion for Reading, Dr. Layne’s address features a charismatic blend of anecdotes and practical suggestions for building an instructional repertoire to successfully engage all readers and is sure to fan the flame of literacy into a raging inferno—inspiring teachers as well as their students to keep the bedside lamp on just a little bit later into the night.

STEVEN LAYNE'S BREAKOUT SESSION: In Defence of Read-Aloud

Author Steven Layne is passionate about reading aloud to kids of all ages.  In this presentation based on his book of the same name, he provides teachers with strong rationale for reading aloud throughout the grades as well as providing information on maximizing instruction via oral delivery.  Guaranteed: loads of practical information and a lot of laughter.
